Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Counseling:
Who can access your services?
Anyone interested in engaging in faith-based counseling services will be a good fit for our program. We strive to model the Biblical principle, "Come all you who are thirsty..." (Isaiah 55)
How is faith-based counseling different?
Similarly to secular counseling, faith-based counseling is an exploration of emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and values. However, while secular counseling does not adhere to a mode of Highest Truth, faith-based counseling holds that Truth is objectively defined, and that morality is determined by God, and that all of life is a process of interaction with that Highest Truth, and that in relationship with Jesus, we find all we search for.
How do I know if counseling is for me?
Counseling can be beneficial for anyone seeking to understand themselves better, to reconnect with their values, modify behavior, process difficult emotions, or pursue meaning despite hardship. Counseling is a space to be listened to, supported, challenged, and poured into.
Faith & Philosophy:
Does Lighthouse subscribe to a specific denomination?
No! We do not specifically adhere to one denomination of the Christian faith over another, and welcome people of all backgrounds and systems of belief. We do not, however, condone spiritually abusive organizations or practices such as cult-like control, forced compliance, intimidation, etc..
Do I need Biblical knowledge to enroll in services?
Absolutely not. In fact, you do not need any background knowledge at all to engage in services with Lighthouse. Come as you are, you are welcome here, and we are here for YOU, not the other way around!
I'm struggling with my faith. Can I still enroll?
We would be honored to meet you & provide you with support, encouragement, and a safe space to explore your doubts, questions, and experiences.
Scheduling:
Do I need an appointment to see a counselor?
Yes, we do request that all clients schedule appointments with their counselor, unless otherwise permitted by the counselor or in the case of an emergency!
How often do counseling sessions take place?
Frequency of sessions is a joint decision between you & your counselor, based on your scheduling needs, how often you might benefit from seeing your counselor, and your financial flexibility. This will be different for every person, but generally the options are weekly, bi-weekly, or once monthly!
How long do sessions last?
Counseling sessions typically last 50 minutes to an hour.
Consultation:
What is entailed in your consultation service?
Our consultation service is a 1:1 meeting with one of our counselors to discuss any questions you might have about mental health, how best to support members of your community in the faith, how to recognize warning signs, and how to coordinate resources. This can also be a time to discuss specific cases that you woud like guidance in.
How is consultation different than the group training?
Consultation is done one-on-one, and is more conversational in structure, versus the group training which is a class-like setting.
